Honing
The latest 'Plateau Honing' technique requires a minimum stock removal of 0.0015" using three different grits. Piston manufacturers claim that this method considerably reduces piston wear in the early stages of running in.
Cross Hatch patterns are equally important to obtain sufficient lubrication to piston rings. Recent research carried out by several manufacturers has proved beyond doubt that detailed attention to exact bore finish specifications is justified.
Different manufacturers however specify varying finishes to suit specific bore and piston materials utilised and to suit the individual running characteristics of their engine. This variation in 'specified finish' results in wide ranging times for honing operations.
